Benefits of Grapefruit Seed Extract

The more I study natural healing remedies, and specifically grapefruit seed extract (see my first post on GSE), the more I am impressed by the reports on benefits of this wonderful fruit and its amber-liquid-derivative. Where do we start? Well, a study by researchers at Jagiellonian University Medical College in Poland shows that grapefruit seed extract’s antibacterial and antioxidant properties calm the gastric tract and speed the healing of stomach ulcers. It concluded “that plant-originated flavonoid substances (also tested were Solon and Amaranth Seed Extract) are highly gastroprotective ”( Physiol Pharmacol. 2005 Mar;56 Suppl 1:219-31.)

The powerful antifungal properties of grapefruit seed extract have ensured it has been regularly used to combat Candida (with success). Dr Allan Sachs, a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and chiropractor, has been at the forefront of successfully treating thousands. He says, “With the help of grapefruit seed extract, thousands of individuals have overcome the multiple effects of Candida.” Quite a few of the drugs prescribed to deal with Candida have proven quite toxic, particularly to the liver. But (and this has been reported by natural health doctors and their patients throughout the world) GSE is one of the best non-toxic alternative cures for this condition.

Dr Jay Gordon, a well-respected Californian doctor says “I have been in private practice for sixteen years…I discovered grapefruit seed extract about five years ago. We pediatricians treat a lot of oral and cutaneous yeast infections (the latter primarily in the diaper area of infants) and are often frustrated at the difficulty we have in clearing up these common and annoying problems. I now recommend grapefruit seed extract at least three to four times every day to my patients and the response is uniformly positive…Grapefruit seed extract is an excellent formulation which I have found to be completely safe for even the youngest babies in my practice.” To get more information, go to positivehealth.com and enter “Jay Gordon” in the Search box.

Grapefruit contains phytochemicals that inhibit tumour formation by promoting the formation of a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme causes a reaction in the liver that helps to make toxic compounds more water soluble for excretion.  Grapefruit juice seems to significantly help with liver detoxification.  In studies with animals and lab tests with human cells, these phytochemicals have been shown to help fight breast, skin, mouth, lung, stomach, and colon cancers. Also, grapefruit pulp contains compounds which may help prevent breast cancer. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (March 2006 ) shows that both the yellow and red grapefruit can reduce the level of the bad-type of cholesterol in your blood, and red grapefruit lowers triglycerides as well.

It is to be noted that one study* concluded that the antibiotic effects of grapefruit seed extract (mentioned in my last post on this subject) were due to the chemical preservatives used to stabilize the grapefruit seed extract rather than to any particular compound found in the extract, so one should consider this with the other studies, do research, and make one’s own conclusions.

The American Chemical Society has found that drinking three glasses of grapefruit juice daily helps to protect against lung and colon cancers by reducing the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. A lab study published in the February 2006 issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry states that the flavonoid naringenin, concentrated in grapefruit, helps repair damaged DNA in human prostate cancer cells. DNA repair is one of the body’s primary defense mechanisms against the development of cancer since it removes potentially cancer-causing mutations in cells. As prostate cancer often remains undetectable for a long time, regular grapefruit consumption may be one way to prevent it developing further.

How does grapefruit seed extract combat disease?

Well, I am not an expert, so you will have to ask them. But what I have discovered personally in my research on this powerful herbal product is that it contains high levels of vitamin C and E, and bioflavonoids. These produce antioxidant action and are known to neutralize free radicals that damage cells and cause disease. One of the main benefits of grapefruit seed extract-and this is my best guess as to why the product is touted among natural health practitioners as being one of the effective natural healing remedies against these diseases- is that it helps in making one’s blood more alkaline. Alkalizing or raising the pH, in one’s body fluids, is one of the most important needs for a healthy body, since fungi, bacteria and viruses etc (which cause disease) are not able to survive in an alkaline oxygen-rich environment. Though lemons, limes, and grapefruits are chemically acid, tests show that when they are digested within the body they actually have an alkaline or alkalizing effect. They also do not have much sugar and have plenty of oxygenating effects.

Madison Cavanaugh in her book The One-Minute Cure, The Secret to Healing virtually all diseases states that “the primary physical cause of all diseases is linked in one way or another to oxygen deficiency — and when the human body is supplied with abundant amounts of oxygen, all cancer cells, viruses, harmful bacteria, toxins, pathogens and disease micro-organisms are killed.”

More information on Prostrate cancer and prostrate problems

A useful article on prostrate cancer can be found here.  In it the author says “…having enlarged prostate symptoms is your wake up call to do something, to change diet, take supplements, exercise and lose weight, and control your insulin levels (which are probably high and you can verify this with a blood test). Since prostate cancer is usually slow-growing, you have time to take care of yourself and get cured. It’s possible.”

He mentions the danger of free radicals (which I’ve already mentioned) and says the symptoms to look for in prostrate cancer are:

  • Pushing or straining to begin urination
  • A weak urinary stream
  • Dribbling after urination
  • A frequent need to urinate, sometimes every 2 hours or less
  • A recurrent, sudden, or uncontrollable urge to urinate
  • Feeling the bladder has not completely emptied after urination
  • Pain during urination
  • Waking at night to urinate

If you have any of these symptoms then see a physician and start learning what you can on the Internet, through books, and from “Functional Medicine” practitioners like myself and the thousands of American doctors that are “functional medicine” docs. Want to find one of those types of doctors? You’ll have to search on their website which is an organization devoted to improving healthcare all over the world using integrative (complimentary and nutritional methods): http://www.functionalmedicine.org/findfmphysician/index.asp”

The author’s suggestions seem sensible and he gives other references, with an accompanying disclaimer.

Remember enlargement of the prostate gland, also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy, is common as men age. The most common symptoms are problems with urination.  Although prostrate cancer seems to get more attention, the condition of having inflammation of the gland -known asprostatitis- is equally common, and can impact fertility. It can also be quite painful and difficult to correct.  A good article on the successful treatment of this for one patient, using natural healing remedies such as Aged Garlic and grapefruit seed extract, can be found here.  It is written by Dr Mark A. Stengler, NMD of La Jolla Whole Health Clinic, and may be useful to you.

If your doctor has eliminated an infection of the prostate or prostate cancer, natural remedies may help relieve your prostate problems.  Chinese herbal formulas such as KAI KIT WAN (Jie Jie Wan) may be used to help reduce the swelling of the prostate and restore free urine flow.

Other tips:

Zinc deficiency causes prostate enlargement. Intake of zinc increases immunity. Men should take the recommended 15 mg zinc dosage daily;

Also it’s best to avoid beverages that contain caffeine, including coffee, tea and soft drinks if you have this condition.  There are smooth muscle cells in the prostate. Caffeine causes smooth muscle cells to constrict, which can make urination more difficult.

Remember that the American Cancer Society recommends using natural treatments to complement conventional cancer treatments. Natural products should NOT replace your current cancer treatment regimen.

Precautions

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) has been shown to be non-toxic at levels many times greater than the recommended dosages. Even when taken daily, GSE seldom produces a significant allergic reaction. However, people who are allergic to citrus fruits should exercise caution in the use of GSE, as well as those taking certain kinds of drugs e.g warfarin (check with your doctor).

Common questions:

What is the difference between Citricidal and grapefruit seed extract?

A: Citricidal is the strongest form of Grapefruit Seed Extract you can buy on the market. There is no such thing as just the Grapefruit Seed Extract compounds by themselves. There must be a concentration. Therefore, in a sense, Citricidal® is the purest form of Grapefruit Seed Extract out there. This has a concentration of 60:40 Grapefruit Compound: Glycerin.

Citricidal, the brand name of a GSE product in the United States containing 60% grapefruit seed extract in an aqueous, vegetable glycerine solution, has, in the United States, been labeled as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) in the Code of Regulations. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Citricidal® for cosmetic preparations. In addition, Citricidal has also been approved by the FDA for the disinfection of foods.

Does Grapefruit Seed Extract damage the good intestinal flora?

A: When taken in normal doses Grapefruit Seed Extract does not affect the friendly bacteria of the intestines
